Information and Communications Technology

Information is vital in the learning of many. Lack of access to information limits the knowledge of many people specially those in the remote areas. According to Wikipedia, ICT refers to the convergence of audio-visual and telephone networks with computer networks through a single cabling or link system.

Computer networking

Nowadays, information are made available in various forms. Many students depend on the information available from the internet. Students and professionals who are conducting researches usually rely on published journal articles from different journal sites, for their references. Extension workers make use of ICT to reach farmers who need assistance and to relay data and information on the transfer of technologies for farming.

Fisheries Industry

The fisheries sector is one of the rapidly growing sectors in the food industry. In fact, it is one of the promising sectors to meet the increasing demand of food. Increasing human population pushes for the aquaculture sector to provide more fish for food consumption. However, stocks from the wild are being depleted and the increasing demand for food caused by human population cannot be supported mainly by catch from the wild. Moreover, there is an increasing demand for marine fishes of high value. But even if coastal resources are utilized for aquaculture purposes, production is much lower compared to the rapid increase in human population.

Many people are engaging in the culture of different species of fish but only few are successful in their operations due to lack of information on management aspects of the cultured species. Research institutions develop technologies wherein its main purpose is to increase the production in fisheries. These technologies are then passed through farmers to help them in attaining their success.

Significance of ICT in Fisheries

Information dissemination in fisheries is important to address the above-mentioned problem of failure in culture operations. the use of ICT is of big help to provide solution to this problem. In addition, there are only few extension workers available to disseminate new informations. With the use of ICT in fisheries, information dissemination can become faster, helping starters to have higher percentage of attaining success. And even with limited extension workers, it is possible to reach out most or all farmers engaged in fisheries.

A research conducted

In addition to the above-mentioned importance, ICT is also important in conducting researches. ICT can be helpful to provide factual issues that will support the result of a research project. Moreover, to initiate a research project, many researchers base their ideas on previous researches which are mostly published online.
